Like me, you have most probably experienced at some point in your life; dry skin, which can be an uncomfortable condition, feeling tight with flaking, itching and even cracked skin.  You can experience dry skin whilst having an oily or combination skin type.

     What causes dry skin?

Climate change - Your skin is your body’s first line of defence against the elements; different climates like cooler temperatures, wind and sun can leave the skin feeling and looking dry and dehydrated.

I know that when the seasons change here in the UK, especially autumn to winter – my skin changes from the ‘outdoor fresh skin look’ to the ‘indoor heated skin look’.

Hormones – Our hormone levels are changing over the years, from pregnancy to the menopause which can change our skin types to a drier skin.  These can sometimes be temporary changes but with the menopause comes aging and this can sometimes change our skin type permanently.

Irritants – Your skin can easily become irritated. Environments that you work or live in can irritate the skin leaving it dry, even the fabric from your clothes can leave the skin irritated and itchy.

Health – If you have suffered from ill health then your skin normally tells you! Including unhealthy eating, too many of the wrong foods or not enough water can leave your skin screaming out for rehydration!

So, with these causes in mind, we need to adapt our skincare routine to rehydrate and put the bounce back into our dry and unhappy skin.

    Action - Rehydrate & Soothe

    Inside Out Support

It’s not just what you put on top of your skin but also what you consume.  Our skin requires certain nutrients to help repair and heal itself.  Healthy foods help keep you hydrated along with keeping your skin smooth and supple.   After all you are what you eat!!

We know that when we consume too many high salted foods, we want to drink water.  Consuming too many high salted foods can lead to dry and puffy skin. A diet with less salt and high in omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidant rich foods will keep the skin nourished and hydrated.

If you’re not already consuming these foods then start now:-

Oily fish – tuna, trout, salmon will help retain the skins moisture due to their high concentration of omega 3 fatty acids.

Olive Oil - rich in vitamin E & omega 3 fatty acids, great for the skin and heart too!

Nuts – abundant in vitamin E an ingredient used in skincare products which helps protect the skin from cell damage.

Cucumbers – water rich helping to increase the skins moisture levels too.

So don’t delay!  Start hydrating your body and skin today, make sure water is part of your diet too!

  • Skin Deep Love (+ Basic Skincare Tips!)

When was the last time you took a good look at your bare face in the mirror or touched the texture of your skin? Yes, I know, I can’t remember the last time, so I decided to take a look...... I was quite surprised at how different the texture of my skin was around my eyes, slightly dry, even though I moisturise daily!  This needed attention!

We often take for granted the largest organ of the body – The Skin!  It is the first impression of your body and reflects your health....it’s your body’s canvas, so a valuable asset.

    Skin Facts

I wanted to go back to basics and take a quick look at the facts about skin and what a marvellous job it does:-

Our skin is about 2mm thick & it is made up of 3 layers

1 - Epidermis, outermost layer, providing a waterproof barrier and contains melanin which protects against the sun’s rays and creates your skin tone

2 - Dermis, contains connective tissues, hair follicles and sweat glands

3 – Hypodermis, made up of fat and connective tissue

The skin has 3 main functions; protection, regulation and sensation

    Nourishment for a Glowing Skin

Your skin needs regular love & attention, you only have one so make sure you look after it. Start with developing a healthy skincare routine, whatever skin type you have; dry, oily, sensitive, treat with care and you’re skin will thank you.

Have a rethink and check your skincare routine, make sure you’re using the 3 steps to protecting your skin - daily:-

Cleanse twice a day, once in the morning and then again at night. This removes any build up of oil, skin debris or make up and removes impurities, preparing the skin for a fresh start.  A deep cleanse is always a good way to help refresh the skin and I love using this product, Rose Hips Black Soap Pore Facial Wash, it really deep cleanses the skin.

Eau de Rose du Maroc Hydrating Facial Spritz TONING close pores whiteheads blackheads

Toning your skin is a ‘must’ after cleansing as this will smooth, nourish and hydrate the skin in preparation for moisturising.  Spray toners are an easy way to make sure you tone; you can also use these throughout the day over your make up to keep it looking fresh. Plus, this Morrocan Rose Water Floral Water Spritz helps to shrink your pores and remove makeup and debris without actually stripping your skin of its natural oil. (Which makes the skin produce more oil- hence oily skin!)

Maracuja Plump Face Cream Natural Skincare Organic

Moisturiser, don’t leave the house without applying it after toning, this helps protect the skin and it’s really important to apply moisturiser whatever skin type you are.  If you use other treatments, these are usually applied before moisturising.  Make sure you protect your skin for UV rays. This Maracuja Plump Face Creme as pictured above is completely free of chemical or synthetic fillers except for a a food-grade preservative (hence 99.7% natural).

    Weekly extras

Sloughing - once or twice a week use an exfoliator, this helps to get rid of dead skin cells, preparing the skin for moisturising which you’ll get more benefits from.

TRY THIS OUT – To see if your skin needs exfoliating, take a small piece of Cellotape and apply sticky side down, gently, to the back of your hand, smooth over and then peel off. I bet you’ll see dead skin cells! So, don’t just exfoliate your face, make sure you exfoliate your body too.

Mask - chill out once a week and have a face mask, this is a great way of taking time out and relaxing.  With the mask applied take a deep breath and relax in the bath, on the sofa, on a lounger or on your bed! It’s good for the mind and body, an excuse to switch off and have some ME time!

Try Rose Hips Black Soap Pore Facial Wash, its Rose Hip Oil soothes and clams the skin, leaving it feeling fresh and rejuvenated.

Always make sure you know what you are using on your skin, look at the ingredients, and choose natural pure ingredients that are gentle and kind to your skin.  Don’t forget the rest of your skin; the body needs tender loving care too!
